MySpace still controlling 80% of the social networks…

Spencer had asked whether social networks were a viable business model, and we could only comment that with thousands of them competing competitively and one particular cookie (MySpace) that stands out of place from the rest spanning a whopping 80% of the market that it would be a bit of a tight squeeze to fit something unique into that space.

If you were wondering why this post even exists, it is to re-iterate the precise percentage that MySpace owns, which at the time of originally commenting figure that had obviously been exaggerated into the 90s or more. We accidentally stumbled into the figures whilst visiting (via RSS of course) the excessively accessible mashable:

MySpace remains king of the social networking category, according to Hitwise, taking in 79.7% of visits to sites in this category of the Month of April, 2007. Facebook is second, with 11.47% of visits, and Bebo comes in third with 1.28% of visits. MySpace’s traffic has increased 70%. Facebook’s increase in traffic is largely due to their opening up of its site for anyone, instead of its previous limitations to those with college and high school email addresses, allowing its traffic to grow 106%. And to illustrate how influential MySpace is for the entire social networking ecosystem, nearly 25% of clicks to the 19 other top social networking sites came directly from MySpace.
