We were planning to wait until we had reached the 10,000 unique visitor threshold before properly thanking everyone for their support and amazing resistance to pressure. However, these thanks were getting slowly delayed due to the fact that our previously obtained unique daily visitation rate of an averaging 350 per day dropped to 150 a day but has slowly gained momentum again due to a few very specific reasons.

We plan to explain some of these reasons whilst also thanking those we love, and are going to present the break-down of our statistics in order for clients to see the detail of statistical analyze available whilst also pointing out how to use those statistics in some small but effective way .

As you may have heard from Randy on Friday evening that we were for a moment or four thinking about taking everyone over the road for some bowling as a way of thanking you for putting up with our chalk and cheese management. However, it was pointed out that by doing this, Geetha would have missed out on the entire experience, which did not feel fair.

Although the culprit behind this planned event was Mark and his obsession with wanting to express something a little more than his usual nagging, and as such, really only thought about inviting the design team, something he especially wanted to do in light of how patient the team had been with him and his creative missions.

Randy had a good point though, for we are in this together, and doing it without Geetha would not have been right.

Getting back to praises, it really dawned us just how particular we were about design when we finally managed to get Chan Kai Loon down into the office.

If only he had been able to get down a few weeks earlier, he would probably be sitting with us now wondering why nobody ever takes him bowling!

After I start blogging, the most surprise in my 1.5 month blogging life is the award from NI-LIMITS. That award really motivated me a lot. I feel so sorry to reject their invitation for a meeting because of my personal problem.

However, I finally change my mind and decided to meet them who doing some great job out there. I learn a lot from the meeting and get some new information from them. I have to mention that I really agree with the definition of quality from them.

So where do we start when we start to thank those that have helped us start?

We could start by thanking our silently labeled cloggy friend for all of his hard work and effort in getting us some pocket money to kick start this adventure, or we could thank the skinniest man from Texas for paying attention and teaching us the way…? Then again, what about poor Spencer, who now painstakingly understands the world of Web 2.0 design, or the ever-proactive Syed for his seemingly eternal task of installing new blogs (not to mention getting them to work perfectly in Firefox and that piece of poo some people know as Internet Explorer)…?

Thanks to Syed…
PHP vs Ruby On Rails by Aizatto

I’ve mentioned previously that only one speaker doesn’t made his presentation in Malay. Aizatto is 21 years old, still studying in Monash University Sunway and he just wowed the crowd with his English speaking accent.

His presentation was really interesting. He compared PHP with Ruby on Rails and made out some really interesting points. His slideshows were simple yet interesting and he really knows what he was talking about. He then showed some of his current projects to the audience and it was really cool. I now have a better understanding of what and how Rails is compared to just reading what it is all about on Rails website.

Basically Rails web programming in Malaysia is still small but I can see the benefit of learning about it. If you have programming language background, you have a better chance of learning Rails more quickly than I do. I wish I had learned computer programming before this rather than having an engineering background. Still, some people say that if you have engineering background, your chances of going into technical stuff is half-way there. I’m starting to think that might be true.

Aizatto maintains a domain with 3 sub-domains which is relatively his Aizatto Personal blog, his Rails blog and his Developer blog. You can download one of his slideshow here.

Then again, what about Geetha and her quest for understanding DNS settings and manage all one thousand and sixty-four of our domains through an incredibly annoying but much needed database? Shannon should be praised for bringing such cheer to the office and providing an excellent example of the internships that we will continue to support, and although in all technicality Jimmy & Chee are so new to our family and should be by all rights and measures walking around the office with a big P stuck to their back; Jimmy can type faster than the whole team at once and Chee has more patience and perseverance than anyone could imagine, it is quite clear that we are finally set and ready to roll, eagerly awaiting Lizzam’s arrival (another Interactive Web Developer joining the team) in September.

However (and for those that do not know, this is because of the sarcastic dark humour of the British), why on earth would we thank any of them when we should instead be thanking the one thousand, two hundred and ninety three useless morons who wasted their lives sending us SPAM and the seven thousand eight hundred other people who have been gracious enough to visit our blog in the past thirteen weeks. Perhaps you ask how we know that over seven thousand different people scattered across the globe have taken the time to read something we have written?

Well, that is what unique visitors are (and mean) when seen in the breakdown of our blog statistics (a snapshot taken on the 11th of August), which we are about to share:

What does this tell us?

It says that our unique daily visitation rate remains stable (with a maximum variation of 40 visitors), which (when combined with the 150 that can be picked-up each day with proactive blogging) allows us to remain patient.

And other than an apparent momentary obsession with MooTools and ClockPick, what does any of this tell us…?

It not only confirms that Izzinet Sdn Bhd have a very poor web-presence, but also shows that due to their poor marketing, we have been fortunate enough to gain additional traffic, and even went so far as to comment on the post with contact details for the company, which from previous reports appeared to be the main reason they came to us in the first place.

It could not be any clearer in the sense that our most popular article to date has been one we wrote regarding the extremely annoying virus that was disguised as a virus protection tool, which we have recevied over 100 different people looking for how to get rid of the nasty little fellow.

As also seen above with the keyword Porn.com (which some dirty bugger searched for from his or her mobile device, only to find our name fourth from the top due to our coverage of its recent RM 35,000,000 sale), pornographic spammers will go to extreme measures to look for traffic - so sad!

Although we should really be sticking strictly to the statistics we are going over, the multi-million if not billion dollar domain name business is alive and kicking with more vengance then ever. This became blindly apparent when the largest ever domain name deal took place in which Business.com was sold for US$ 350 Million, which is well over RM 1,000,000,000 for an eight letter long address.

The exact impact of the deal becomes even more in ones face when the likes of TechCrunch are even running with the story (as opposed to the Domain Tools Blog and their matter of fact way of doing things).

Business.com has closed another chapter in its long journey from a $7.5 million domain name bought on a hope and a prayer, selling to RH Donnelley for $350 million (WSJ reporting up to $360 million). RH Donnelley beat out Dow Jones and the New York Times during the bidding. The site had been on the block since late June and drew a lot of attention for outlandish valuations that turned out to be closer to the truth.

The property reportedly had an EBITDA of around $15 million/year. While previous speculation framed the sale multiple of 25 times EBITDA ($400 million), it finally sold for around 23 times. The sale is about 47 times the $7.5 million 1999 purchase price.

The Dow Jones and the New York Times were both bidding on the company. The sale was expected to close between $300 to $400 million. So the price was right on target. Business.com currently brings in about $15 Million dollars a year in revenue. So the sale was 24 times earnings. This is a rather high price for a company but generally bigger companies sell for a higher multiple. 24X is very healthy. If a company is able to demonstrate $1 Million dollars in revenue that would make it worth about $24 Million according to these numbers. However, smaller companies sell for a smaller multiple. Generally between 8X to 15X. Now you can see why 24X looks so good for this company. One could argue it was the domain name that made it so valuable.

On top of that, Pharmacy.com went on sale for US$ 50 Million, and someone was even stupid enough to pay US$ 70,000 for an INFO extension, but considering it is NewYork.info and aims to provide information specific to New York, the chances are that the laugh will be on us, especially if…?

Anyway; getting back on track…

And what can we deduce from these facts?

Other than the fact that if we had not created a Google Compliant XML Sitemap and linked ourselves into several of their other affilate services that we may not have had any traffic at all, but on top of that, Kailoon’s design tips have provided us with the most traffic from any other independent blog or website and that we owe him a lot more than our gratitude, which is why we have persuaded those with the power to set him up as a freely sponsored founding member of KLews.net (The KL News Network), not that he will get away with sitting back and doing nothing more than reap the rewards, but are certain that his personality alone will speak for itself as he continues to help others in search of his inner artistic peace.

It also shows it was a good move to introduce our newly re-capped and selective sprinkle of Microsoft Updates that were provided (mostly) by 4sysops, which is a must read for any network adminsitrators out there

It also goes to show that Widget.com.my was our best domain purchase to date as it alone has brought fourteen new people to our blog whilst we continue to develop the site, people who just randomly typed the word directly into their address bars (rather than searching for it or being referred to us from some place).

We can tell you one thing about the up-comming launch of our widget development digital labratory, and that is that Shannon is going to pull her hair out on Monday when she discovers she will be finishing off the concept by the end of the day.

Visitor Browser Statistics (click for more info):

As though the deeply satisfying surprise of Firefox being the most popular browser of choice for those that read our blog was not enough, it is even stranger that over 16% of our users use something that the stastical engine (many thanks Omry) did not recognise, which in consideration of just how long that last list was is simply staggering.

However, other than pointing out these facts there is very little we can do but take note of just how many browsers get fairly equally used though tend to need different code structuring in order to maintain their perfection across them all, which is one of the most important and under appreciated responsibilities of any web designer even considering themselves semi-professional.

This tells us one basic thing - we do not have enough visitor interaction. We have a lot of one comment commentors, but other than our own general administration, we have only three different people who have commented more than once on our blog (all three of them being nothing more than two comments), but are concious of the fact that we personally moderate every comment, whoever made by, as we believe this allows us to guarantee a certain level of quality, and quality is something we are all about…

On one final note, thirty two new people in the world have found something out about NI-Limits in the time it has taken us to write this article…
